
Jazmine was a Philadelphia native is a native of Philadelphia, and was raised in the city. Pam the mother of Jazmine was a backing vocalist for Philadelphia International Records. As a child her father was selected to be the city's Historic Strawberry Mansion curator. Her family later moved into the mansion's historical building. In 2005, she graduated from the Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts in the class of a vocal music major. Sullivan began singing in the school's choir as a contralto after which she was a part of the adult choir a few years after that. Sullivan wasn't exposed to the world of secular music for the first time. "I started singing as a soloist in the church, and someone was urging me to sign up to gospel records when I turned 11. But I wasn't ready to do that," she says. "Then McDonald's offered a competition for children in major cities. In the end, I got the chance to sing Accept What God Allows on It's Showtime Apollo. The audience was extremely supportive." The singer performed along with Stevie Wonder at his grandson's birthday celebration at thirteen. Sullivan made her first signing with Jive Records when she was 15. She recorded an entire album, but the album wasn't released. Sullivan was eventually dropped from the label. They maintained a friendship with Missy Elliott and produced several tracks on her debut album, such as the brash single "Backstabbers" - produced by Timbaland and written by Elliott.
